EthOss Mixing Guide: Step-by-Step Preparation for Predictable Graft Placement
Consistent graft handling begins with correct preparation. While the EthOss mixing process is straightforward, attention to each stage helps achieve the ideal consistency for placement and supports predictable surgical outcomes.

Step 1: Prepare the Surgical Site
Before mixing EthOss, ensure the recipient site has been fully prepared and thoroughly degranulated.
Completing site preparation first allows the material to be mixed and placed without unnecessary delays, helping maintain ideal handling characteristics at the point of use.
Step 2: Loosen the Material
EthOss is supplied as a powder within a syringe. Before adding saline, the material should be loosened to improve hydration and mixing.
To loosen the material, keep the syringe cap in place and pull back the plunger to create additional space within the syringe. You can also tap the top of the syringe several times to agitate the powder.
The material should become visibly less compact, with air pockets apparent throughout the syringe. If the powder remains densely packed, repeat the process until it is fully loosened.
Step 3: Add Saline and Mix Thoroughly
Once the material has been loosened:
- Remove the cap.
- Add sterile saline to the top of the syringe.
- Replace the cap securely.
- Shake thoroughly to ensure even hydration.
The aim is to achieve a uniformly mixed graft, with only a minimal amount of excess saline visible on the surface.
Step 4: Achieve the Ideal Consistency
After mixing, excess saline should be removed.
First compress the material into sterile gauze to gently express any excess fluid.
Correctly prepared EthOss should have a smooth, cohesive, paste-like consistency. This consistency indicates that the material is ready for predictable placement and adaptation within the defect.
Step 5: Place the Graft
Once mixed, place the graft directly into the prepared surgical site.
A key consideration during placement is to avoid overpacking the material.
After placement apply firm pressure using dry sterile gauze and maintain pressure for approximately 3 to 5 minutes.
The graft should become stable and resistant to pressure, indicating that it has been properly adapted to the site.
Step 6: Closure and Healing
Following graft placement, make sure you achieve full passive soft tissue closure and suture according to the requirements of the procedure.
In many cases, implants may be restored following an approximately 12-week healing period, subject to clinical assessment and appropriate ISQ readings.
