What should we look for when choosing a bone graft material?

Alloplasts, allografts, xenografts, autologous – there are many different types of bone grafting material available, all with supporting theories and research. How do we know which material to choose?

A useful framework can involve looking first at the “ideal” characteristics of a material, bearing in mind the basics of bone biology and osseointegration discussed above, and seeing which tick the most boxes.

Osteoinductive vs osteoconductive? Or both?
Biocompatible?
Resorbable vs non-resorbable?
Risk of disease transmission?
